an exploration into the limits of human auditory perception specific to rhythm. when successive sonic impulses are closer together than 1/16th per second, or about 62 milliseonds, it becomes impossible for us to perceive them as separate events. at this threshold the impulse, or in this case, sample, loses its rhythmic properties and becomes a pitched tone. spectograms were captured using Ircam’s Audiosculpt software, pulled into Rhino 6 using hieghtfield map to 3D print as seen below. photos by Yue Xu.
