sonando el yunque is an experimental electronic music piece I performed as part of the Proximity Pop Up Performance Festival at High Concept Labs (https://highconceptlabs.org/) based out of Mana Contemporary Chicago on Friday August 6, 2021. The piece was composed using field recordings I took in Puerto Rico in July 2021 while traveling all over the island in search of my biological father, his family, and also the spirit of the recently downed Arecibo radio telescope. Using Ableton, Monome norns and several midi controllers, my intent was to highlight natural rhythms of Puerto Rico and create adjacencies to some of the problems presently ailing Puerto Rico as a result of being an unincorporated US territory: fossil fuel dependency, illegal debt, the Jones Act, etc.
This is a developing work. Video recording by Julia Kolesnyk.
