Communication networks, power infrastructures, surveillance grids, data centers - all linked through a shared energetic substrate of 60 Hz. Signal Architecture reveals hidden electromagnetic and seismic languages in the built environment. Low-frequency (ELF/VLF) electromagnetic (EM) waves—particularly those generated by nearby urban infrastructure, like grid-powered devices, converters, and CTA trains—are the raw material of this installation, drawn closer by a copper wire loop antenna. This EM signal will act as the carrier, and will be modulated in real-time by architectural vibration taken by a geophonic microphone on the station’s structure. With the onset of the pandemic, workers emptied out of downtown business districts and suburban office parks, retreating to work from their kitchen tables or spare bedrooms. Nearly two years later, the office real estate market remains in crisis; as remote work becomes a long term feature of American white collar society, office buildings continue to sit unused. “When faced with a totally new situation,” media theorist Marshall McLuhan writes, “we tend to always attach ourselves to the objects, to the flavor of the most recent past. We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future.” Positioning ourselves at an inflection point, Fantasy / Reality / Decay explores the corporate office as an impossible space—a setting historically imbued with manifold associations, promises, desires, and frustrations, yet also one whose future no longer holds. How can we, in looking back at the American office, devise alternative ways to interact in this liminal environment? Fantasy / Reality / Decay seeks to distort cultural associations of the office, especially the individualistic, capitalist aspirations of the space and the more mundane—even depressing—qualities of working life. The gallery installation does not accurately recreate a corporate office setting so much as construct immersive situations inspired by its quintessential features, in order to imagine speculative, dreamlike futures for objects left behind when employees evacuated, and propose new models for engaging with them and each other in these failed spaces. The objects assembled within the gallery draw out the dissociations created by such liminal spaces, considering how hopeful fantasies tie into functionality and how unrealized promises lead to decay.The exhibition is a collective endeavor by Sydney Gush, Morgan Eldridge, Eric Capper, Sarah Brophy, and Sophie Buchmueller. Born from an intentionally collaborative process, Fantasy / Reality / Decay seeks to transform the gallery into a communal and relational environment in which objects, made both by specific artists and collectively, communicate with each other. The compositions were made using several sonic materials, incuding: BBC recordings of cars, recordings of the car radio taken as I drove around, short wave radio recordings, and closed-loop electroacoustic tracks - some sampled and some my own. The original impetus for this piece came from a show called Garage Sale at the Oliva Gallery in west Chicago. Artists were invited to respond to objects from the gallery; I chose to work with a discarded old car tire in the gallery’s basement. My goal with this sound installation was to provide a dynamic nostalgia using representations of car culture, in this case sound and a static used tire, combined with my own memory of growing up driving around Queens, NY. This, I felt, gave it a sense of motion despite being immobile, which felt apt to submit it a show for kinetic sound art at the Bridgeport Art Center in south Chicago. Steel, aluminum alloy, rubber, carbon black, wire, fabric, amps, speakers 25” x 25” x 12” 3-channel sound installation exploring three different definitions of a moment: In physics, the moment of a force is a measure of its tendency to cause a body to rotate about a specific point or axis. Moment = force x distance In time, a moment is a medieval unit corresponding to approximately 90 seconds. And in a society, a moment is a brief event that occurs during an interaction between two or more beings. **below is a recording of all three channels of the sound installation running in a loop as they were when the installation was live. The piece was composed using field recordings I took in Puerto Rico in July 2021 while traveling all over the island in search of my biological father, his family, and also the spirit of the recently downed Arecibo radio telescope. Using Ableton, Monome norns and several midi controllers, my intent was to highlight natural rhythms of Puerto Rico and create adjacencies to some of the problems presently ailing Puerto Rico as a result of being an unincorporated US territory: fossil fuel dependency, illegal debt, the Jones Act, etc.&nbsp; This is a developing work. The second image below is the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array survey (GLEAM) of the Milky Way galaxy taken by Dr. Natasha Hurley-Walker and her team at the Murchison Widefield Array in Western Australia. By tapping into radio waves they are able to identify distant star forming regions, supernova remnants, and radio galaxies beyond our own in the electromagnetic spectrum—matter, events, and other cosmic readings that the comparatively narrow band of visible light cannot see. This recorded radio data, called visiblities, is turned into an image via a Fourier transform. But, what does it sound like? What are its temporal qualities?
